Exercises in Art
A few days after my illustrations for the book Exercises in Style have been selected for the Illustration Served group on behalf of the Behance, the book has been awarded as the best illustrated children’s book at the Belgrade Book Fair, one of the most important book fairs in Europe.
Exercises in Style written by Simeon Marinkovic and published in 2014 by a publishing house Kreativni Centar from Belgrade, has been inspired by a well-known book Exercises in Style by Raymond Queneau.
The main topic of the book and my illustrations are the raven and the fox and their eternal fight over cheese. Through 70 different literary styles and a lot more illustrations the book follows the two characters trying to outwit one another.
I was given complete freedom both in illustrating and designing the book. To follow the main idea of the book, I conceived my illustrations as exercises in different artistic styles. Thus each story and each poem has been illustrated in a different style.
My illustrations have been praised by my colleague illustrators, agents and editors I work with. In only six months the book has been awarded two prizes for the illustration.
This has been the second time that my works have been selected for the Illustration Served group by the Behance, and I think this is a great way for my work to be presented to a great number of artists and editors.
With respect, Dusan Pavlic
